Day Two (Tuesday April 23rd): A Mascot Project.
Your task today is to either think of or research a project that embodies that house/animal. It could be a knitting or crochet pattern – either of the animal itself or something that makes you think of the qualities of that house. Alternatively it could be a type or colour of yarn, or a single button. Whatever you choose, decide upon a project and blog about how and why it relates to your house/creature. You do not have to make this project! It is simply an exercise in blogging about how you come to decide upon what projects to make. Try and blog about the journey which inspiration and investigating patterns, yarns, stitches, (etc) can often guide you through. You may wish to make a collage or ‘mood board’ to present several ideas, or even sketch out your own design.
There is a project that I attempted years ago that is a perfect mascot. I made too many wrong choices when jumping in that first time. The yarn wasn’t the best choice. For this project something with stretch and memory is necessary. I picked a color I thought would be a good choice but it wasn’t. A lighter color, maybe blue or gray, would have been better suited to the design. I only made it though about a third of the project before I cast it aside. But if I was to do it again I would make a number of better choices: different yarn, different color, different needles. But sadly I think the best choice is to not knit this project. While I love the cables and knee socks would be so much fun, I don’t think I would wear them. I don’t really wear skirts or dresses and under pants knee socks this fancy would be a complete waste. But for me this is the project that is my mascot. It is my favorite project that I will never knit.

I’m very tempted by those socks. I have some yarn bought specially to make knee socks and haven’t found the right pattern yet. These are going in the queue!

That’s too bad…those are cool looking socks…

I like your socks. But if you’re not already feel the mojo, maybe it helps to rip and to knit with the yarn something you really like. I know it’s easier said than done. I’m facing the same problem with my bright yellow cowl. I’m still not sure about.

This is very thought provoking. I am afraid that I would have to see this through to the bitter end but I think that yours is the healthier approach!

That is so pretty! Have you turned the heel on them yet? Could they be used as arm warmers instead of socks??

Beautiful yarn and a lovely design. Too bad it wasn’t working for you.

That’s very interesting ! Indeed, if you feel stuck, if you don’t like the color and the yarn, and you know you’re never going to make them, you might just never feel like finishing them. I think we all have a project like that, it sounded like a good idea, but the result doesn’t work for us, even if other people might love it.

it is brave to admit the project is a no go….. pattern and work looks lovely though perhaps take a run up with the grey yarn choice you prefer in hand and gift them to someone..closure is a good thing x

Too bad they are knee socks, because they are gorgeous. But I would never wear them either…

I love knee socks but I’ve never had a pair actually stay up where they should. Making my own would help but I doubt they would stay up, too. ::sigh::

Is it a waste to have super fancy knee high socks under pants? Or is it an excuse to feel superior and cackle madly?
(Now I want to knit knee socks. Gah.)

Does it matter that they are beauty hidden? If you think you would enjoy the knitting, don’t give up!!!

They would make beautiful fingerless mitts….

They are gorgeous but though hard I’ve found it’s better to quit a project that’s not working because my inner voice just won’t leave me alone! It sounds like you learned a lot though!

That’s a great idea for a mascot project, the one that never was. The design is beautiful though!

I have a special fondness for knee socks and these are lovely! The cable work is so pretty…maybe you can modify the pattern somehow.

Since I don’t do socks, I applaud your decision to never make this project (no matter how lovely the cables are). 🙂
