My Mind Reels

As I sit on my couch, as I’ve been told I should what with there being a pandemic, I watch an obscene amount of TV while playing games on my phone or surfing the internet. My brain hasn’t been able to knit. Don’t get me wrong, I want to knit but my mind tends to think when I knit and watching what’s going on in the world I don’t want to spend too much time over thinking what I see. I do have questions though. I’ve taught my children to always ask questions if you don’t understand. So here are some questions.

We live in a post 9/11 world. The rules changed then. We have given up some of our freedoms for security. While I haven’t been on a plane in eons I have been to the airport where you can’t park near the terminals. You can’t pass through security without a boarding pass and an ID that must match that boarding pass. Don’t even think of leaving an unattended bag. There are security cameras everywhere. My town has cameras on all public buildings. My neighbors have cameras on their houses in the form of Ring doorbells. I’ve entered federal buildings since 9/11. I’ve gone through metal detectors and had my bag x-rayed. I’ve had to explain why I was there. Could you tell me how people got into the Capital building? This was not one person who snuck in a side door. This was 50+ people, some who looked like they were dressed up for an extras part in Dances With Wolves, who moved through the building as if they knew where they were going. They entered chambers and offices. 5 people are dead. Now we’ve been told that things were stolen. All the while cameras were filming the entire thing so we can see clips repeatedly on the news. Who is responsible for the lack of security at the Capital? It should be among the most secure locations in our country. The clips I’ve seen didn’t satisfy me so I looked at some longer versions that are available online. I don’t want to think that this was allowed to happen. I do not believe the narrative as it is being sold though. Someone allowed the security to be too light. I’d like to hear who and why. The chief of the Capital police resigned. Why is he not being held accountable? Does the security of this building not fall on his shoulders? Why have they (senate & congress) not called for an investigation into the security of their workplace? Why do I feel like I’m not being told the whole truth? Why do I feel like I’m being fed a narrative? Where is the logical questioning? Why am I being told that if these were BLM protesters they’d have been treated differently? I would hope that the security rules at the Capital building would be applied to all. What do you think? Are you as confused as I am?

I have those same questions. I have been through security at the Capitol…it starts well back from the actual building, and my group of high school students were checked quite carefully. Why were these folks allowed through….who were these folks? Why did the security force just disappear and do nothing? I saw lots of unarmed people filing through statuary hall in a quite orderly fashion…seems fishy that they couldn’t be herded back out.

    • When I was watching this unfold my mind immediately went to the most recent time someone climbed the fence at the Whitehouse and was tackled by multiple secret service agents. The Capital event is just bizarre.

I’m afraid there was some staging involved by the other side, to ensure that it looked bad.

      • Something about it was staged. I do not want to think that people we elected chose to create drama costing people their lives just to change the narrative. That would put us in a far worse place than the majority of the country suspects.
I also want to know why we have heard nothing about the person who shot the woman who died and the person who hit the Capital policeman in the head with the fire extinguisher who also died. These should be under investigation. There was so much video and nothing on the Washington DC police website looking for the identity of these people. There are photos of other people they are looking to identify. It’s all very strange.

I am not well informed as I haven’t followed the news much, so please excuse me for any inaccuracy.

From a superficial glance, I would think that the action was organised / staged / supported / covered by someone in power or a faction with great control power.
Why would protesters be otherwise allowed in without any check? It’s impossible that whoever could just “walk in” into a key place of democratic government, let alone a large crowd.
And why not much is being done about investigating the facts and casualties?

I would think that based on previous behaviour, the outgoing president and factions close to him would be the suspects of staging. Do you think or have reasons to believe that this might not be the case?
I refer, for example, to these words “I can see another four years of “not my president” coming based on the way things are unfolding” and “I’m afraid there was some staging involved by the other side, to ensure that it looked bad.”. But perhaps I just misunderstood their meaning

Thanks for sharing your thoughts and the information you gathered from a close scrutiny of evidence!

      • I can see the right saying “not my president” for 4 years after hearing it from the left for 4 years. My logic tells me that it was Capital police that held the door open. They are the ones in control of the building. Who is in control of them? They take orders from someone in that building. The president is in charge of the whole government but there is a layer between him and the individual buildings. They are the ones who would be responsible. As for looking bad, I think everyone looks bad from the people who wandered into the building, the ones who broke and stole things, the media who is playing it like a coup, the congress and senate whose leadership is pushing that narrative to the president who didn’t foresee a possible problem. As a country we look like a joke to the entire universe.

The whole thing is crazy. I should have said, there was staging on both sides, the “patriots” were somewhat organized, but the lack of countering by those whose job it is do protect the Capitol is just as troublesome. The. Of course there are those who just tag on to any ”cause” to make trouble, for the joy of making it. There were plenty of those too.

  3. I’m every bit as confused as you. I’m also angry and disgusted that this was ALLOWED to happen. And I know that if the rioters had been black there would have been tremendous injuries and deaths. For four years I have been thinking “not my president “, now I’m sadly thinking this isn’t my America.

    • There were people of color in the group, not a lot but some. I agree with your word: allowed. The videos I saw (long ones not the shorter edited for the news ones) showing what looked like police opening barriers and doors then waving people inside. Of course with the purge on YouTube and Twitter most of these videos are gone along with the accounts that posted them.
I can see another four years of “not my president” coming based on the way things are unfolding. It seems everyone in power is more interested in their personal agenda and not those of the American people as a whole.

We are being fed a narrative. They are trying to see who will fall in line and which side they will choose. I expect more civil unrest coming this year as they are trying to get people to act more like sheep and follow the herd. I’ve personally given up on the whole of society and just do my own thing and not ruffle anyone’s feathers. I no longer support anyone as I feel all sides are corrupt. I am actually surprised that they didn’t say what happened in DC was a “peaceful protest” as they have been calling all of the riots that this past year. People have gotten crazy and nobody cares about their neighbors anymore. We need a good dose of Mr. Rogers Neighborhood right now. I’m going to go to my job at the pizza shop, knit when I feel like it, build my veggie garden, and help my community, where I can, to learn to be more self-sustainable.

    • It’s so sad that it’s come to this. The civil unrest will probably increase. I don’t see most Americans becoming sheep though. There is a point where Americans say enough is enough. I can see it in my deep blue state starting. People have stopped following the Covid rules. They go where they want and spend time with who they want. I’m sure this adds to the increase in cases. I’m more concerned that unrest will step over the line into war. From the videos I’ve seen in Portland and Seattle the unrest has created what look like war zones already. We aren’t headed to a good place.

I am confused as well. The Vice President was in the building and could have been killed or greatly harmed. Where was his body guards to ensure his safety. Very interesting indeed. The gates were open to let them in and they were led out the same way.

    • Apparently, for the Senate, the first they knew something was happening was when Pence’s security hustled him away – after all, Secret Service are few and the insurgents many. One of the things that did go right was that the part of security that was responsible for the safety of the House, Senate and VP did their jobs with no injury to anyone, getting all to their respective “secure locations” in an efficient fashion. I figure that no matter what they did, the Capitol police couldn’t win – especially as they were acting in the shadow of the over-reaction to the BLM demonstrators. Use adequate force to keep out the invaders? People would yell (with cause!) excessive use of force! Interfere as little as possible once VP and legislators were safe, what is referred to as de-escalation, you’re not doing your job! What I want to know is how the windows were breakable in the first place – you’d think the building would have been hardened following 9/11.

      Liked by 1 person

      • Exactly what I wonder. Remember a while back a senator got shot while playing softball. Why wouldn’t they have put bulletproof glass in all the windows. I hope they get to the bottom of what happened and do whatever they need to do to insure that the building is secure and this can never happen again.

I watched more CNN the day it happened than I’ve ever watched in my life, and I still don’t g45 et it. Regardless of your political affiliation, what those people did was wanton destruction of property and it was an out of control riot. They were spurred on by a man that I feel is a sore loser and has proven unfit to lead. He lost, he and his followers need to move on – peacefully.

    • I can’t complain about your conclusions. They’re valid. I am just questioning why. I saw no weapons in the hands of the rioters. They had no guns or bricks. Many had flags which I would think are not normally allowed to be carried into a federal building. The police were armed. They did not pull their weapons until there was utter chaos inside the building. These people had to make it through multiple layers of security without being questioned or stopped. The whole thing is just plain bad.

      Liked by 1 person

      • This isn’t true, on the videos I have seen and on the BBC and CNN they have reported of one man having 2 bombs and many were armed and can be seen to be armed on the videos. If you look at the maps of where they infiltrated you can see they breached not the normal entrances. If you look at the video of the lone black security guard or police officer where he is heading backwards up one of stairscases but radioing for support and what’s he supposed to do, he was on his own against a mob and when they move upstairs he gets the support or of many other officers. Also it is being reported that the FBI are investigating both sides of the incident.

        Liked by 1 person

      • The FBI showed photos of a man on the street near the locations where the pipe bombs were left asking that he be identified. I didn’t see that they had identified him as being inside the Capital building itself. As far as I know the only ones who were armed with guns in the building were Capital police, the Swat looking police and the person (mixed reports on it being male or female due to the mask and possible face shield) who fired the weapon.
The video I saw with the man moving backwards and up the stairs (is this the one you mean?) is odd. There seems to be someone on the stairs shooting video behind him but not helping him in any way. He made his way up the stairs with those people behind him. I didn’t notice that they were armed.
The entire event seems to have been filmed and different videos are being shown. Wouldn’t you think they would have worked to get the people out of the building instead of filming?

      • That video was shot by a senator on his phone and tweeted by that senator. You think if that white senator wasn’t there filming the situation that the lone black officer would have been safe? The senator latter tweeted he was latter hiding in the building and safe. I’m sorry I made a comment, it triggered me and I should have not responded. Our news sources are obviously showing different videos.

        Liked by 1 person

      • I saw no video credited to a senator. But from the description we saw the same video.
I try not to judge anything by the color of someone’s skin. I don’t think this officer was in any more or less danger because of his race. Everyone who belonged in that building was taken by surprise. It’s a wonder more weren’t killed.

  7. I’ve watched the videos as well, and I’ve also seen the police just stand aside and wave people in. And for anyone who wants to blame President Trump – there have been four years of rallies with huge numbers of people attending and minimal violence. Yes, there have been clashes, but there have been no cities burned, no riots, no buildings torn down, no federal or state government buildings stormed. Is he a sore loser? I think if there was an actual investigation -and yes, I’ve watched the hearings with people testifying to seeing fraud – he and the millions who voted for him would be far more willing to accept defeat. I know I would, but I and millions of others feel that the democrats cheated. Watching the Twitter and Facebook purge yesterday leaves me with little hope that the people now in charge care about anything but revenge. Who gained from this debacle? Not the President, not his supporters. There are people in power demanding that his supporters be purged and the country “cleansed.” If that doesn’t scare you, nothing will

    • I too watched the hearings. Some things could be misinterpreted but when the tech guy explaining to the Georgia representatives that he and his team had found an open Dominion voting machine attached to the internet and they were able to hack into it live I was stunned. Georgia was at that moment in the middle of early runoff voting. The CEO of that company had said just a few days before that the machines don’t have internet capabilities. This alone deserves explanation. Georgia should never have used those machines for the runoff. Internet capable voting machines should never be used!
No one has gained from this. It has just widened the gap and made reconciliation as a country all the more difficult. It completely sets the wrong tone as we transition to a new administration.

      • I heard an interview with the Lt Governor of Texas, he said that while Dominion was giving them a demo of the machines, one of his aides inserted a jump drive into one and downloaded everything on it. He said that was why Texas didn’t use those machines. Unreal to me that anyone doesn’t want this stuff investigated.
I think the Democrats think they’ve gained power. Will they over-reach? I think they already have. There will be no smooth transition, I fear, there will be nothing but trouble. ahead.

        Liked by 1 person

      • I think Texas was very smart to not purchase the Dominion machines. I was disappointed when the SCOTUS turned away the Texas lawsuit for standing. I think that was the correct venue for the suit but fear kept them from hearing it. You would think having lifetime job security would take away the fear. I wonder what or who they were afraid of. My guess is it must be something pretty big to put the Constitution aside.
There will be over reach. They still have days before they’re in the Whitehouse and they’re showing disdain for unity after trying to push for it before. The purge on social media is the start. There are already people losing their job because they attended the rally. People have lost their book deals. We’ll be hearing whispers of underground resistance next.
Somehow we have got to find a way to come together as a country or I fear civil war is on the horizon.

      • I agree. My biggest concern is that a portion of the population has no idea they are in just as much trouble as the other. They’re just going after the right first. The left will be the target of the elites once they have squashed the right.

  8. I saw the same thing. I saw the video where the cop shot the Marine Vet too. He just walked out of the side of the room, aimed his pistol and shot her. She was just standing there. If you look at some videos, these dudes are all dressed up in some kind of drag. Conservative Trump supporters don’t dress odd – we look normal. Well, we are normal. I think the liberal loons set us up. I’m sure it’s just another way to GET TRUMP.

    • The video of that poor woman being shot is unbelievable. If it isn’t bad enough that an unarmed person was shot and killed, the shooter shot in the direction of other people including armed police (who looked like Swat to me in full uniform with helmet and large gun). In my mind that does not seem like a trained police person. It was incredibly reckless.
I hope we get answers. The leadership seems much more interested in railing against the president who has less than two weeks left in his term. It seems counterproductive to waste time going after him when there is transition work to be done.

As for censorship, it’s been creeping in somewhat slowly but this really ramped it up.
This whole thing feels a little 1930’s Germany to me but all I know about history I read in a book no doubt written by the winning side.
