Birthday Quiz

Historical Photo.

Today is my birthday. So far I have been celebrating the way I prefer: NO Christmas activities and lots of doing nothing that is ordinarily required. The plan involves a late lunch of fast food (damn you Covid taking away my fancy restaurant meal) and an evening of knitting.

But for now I think a quiz is in order. Feel free to answer in the comments or leave a link if you’re answering on your blog. Here we go!

  • What is the most unique/fun/well enjoyed gift you’ve gotten for your birthday?
  • What is your preferred dessert to celebrate your birthday?
  • What is your worst birthday memory?
  • Tell us a memory from a birthday when you were a child.
  • How would you celebrate your birthday if money was no object?

Here are my answers.

  • When a person has a birthday that is smack dab in the midst of the holidays the birthday celebration tends to get a little lost. I have to say the funnest “gift” is a nephew with whom I now share my birthday. Also I like it a lot when The Husband suggests I buy myself some yarn for my birthday.
  • I do like cake on my birthday, always chocolate with chocolate frosting. My favorite birthday celebration dessert ever was an ice cream cake from Baskin Robins: chocolate cake with chocolate chip ice cream “frosted” in coffee ice cream. So darn good!
  • My worst birthday memory is actually one that happened more than once when I was a kid. At least three times my birthday party was postponed due to snowstorms.
  • I was about 8 years old and I’d been taking skating lessons so my mother planned my birthday party at the local skating rink. She even made me a skating outfit. It was glorious to 8 year old me.
  • I’d love to rent a big house overlooking the ocean in Maine. I’d invite family and friends (all of Blogville too) to sit by the fireplace and enjoy a weekend. There would be good food, conversation and of course crafts. I’d never want it to end.

Remember to leave your answers in the comments or a link to your blog.

  1. You can’t even get fancy restaurant takeout where you are? And that doesn’t look like chocolate frosting, although it certainly looks festive.

    My birthday:
What is the most unique/fun/well enjoyed gift you’ve gotten for your birthday? I’m not big on birthday celebrations; no memorable gifts. Many years, no gifts at all. Often I don’t remember it’s my birthday unless my sister calls to wish me a happy one.
What is your preferred dessert to celebrate your birthday? Chocolate with more chocolate – cake, pie, candy, the best when my sister made me Gianduia Chocolate Mousse Cake.
What is your worst birthday memory? I was going to say helping a friend move the sailboat, after dark, with rough seas, going below to read charts, and being very seasick. That was also one of the best – feeling very alive out there. But the absolute worst was keeping vigil while my husband was dying. I couldn’t even think of it being my birthday.
Tell us a memory from a birthday when you were a child. Family gatherings with my godparents and their 4 kids, feeling surrounded by love.
How would you celebrate your birthday if money was no object? I would take family and friends with me to New Zealand for a few weeks – mostly to be outdoors, but with a series of nice indoor spaces to retreat to. And we’d eat chocolate. And seafood. We would eat out some, and cook some. But not until Covid is under control!

Happy birthday! You’re lucky to have been born during the month when everyone is nice and cheerful and kind and generous. Christmas is my favorite holiday for those very reasons.

  4. Happy Birthday! I’m also a December kid! Most unique? A cake that an elderly relative made that had a carousel on top with animal crackers as the ponies. It was lovely, and the frosting was made with liniment since she couldn’t see the label! (My mom warned us not to eat it!) Worst memory? Getting money that I then spent on presents for others. Favorite dessert – cheesecake. Best family memory? Just everyone being together and getting presents. What would I do if I had all the money in the world? Take all my friends to Ireland for a month.

  5. Happy birthday and many happy returns. So, another quiz – goody!!
The birthday present I’ve enjoyed most was my lovely trip to Helsinki in Finland this February which was a gift from, and shared with, my gorgeous daughter. We had such fun, it was a lovely place to explore, and my daughter is a consummate holiday-planner so I didn’t have to do any thinking at all.
I don’t really have a particular dessert for birthdays, although as a child either my Dad would make us a rich fruit cake (like a Christmas cake) or we’d have a fatless sponge filled with copious amounts of whipped cream.
My worst birthday memory is probably being subjected to parties as a child – I am not a parties person.
The most memorable birthday event from my childhood was having to take part of my Eleven Plus exam (to stream you into either Grammar or Secondary education) on my 11th birthday.
If money was no object I would spend my birthday in a house I owned, surrounded by the lovely furniture from previous family homes, and have my sister and her husband over for morning coffee then my daughter, son-in-law and grandson over for afternoon tea. I’d wear a gorgeous Ralph Lauren outfit from the late 1970s/early 1980s and have some really special tea from Twinings which everyone else would say wasn’t as nice as the Yorkshire Tea from the supermarket!

First of all, a very happy birthday! Enjoy the coming year!
    My answers:
What is the most unique/fun/well enjoyed gift you’ve gotten for your birthday?
A visit to Merlin’s cave in Cornwall (my birthday too falls in winter). A surprise birthday cake and flowers from my son (in different years).
What is your preferred dessert to celebrate your birthday?
I love cake in any form except chocolate. I love apple-y ones. A Victorian sponge. Or lemon drizzle. I love ice cream cakes, but it’s not the best thing for a winter birthday..
What is your worst birthday memory?
This year my mum forgot my birthday. Couldn’t bring myself to forgive her because my birthday is the day after hers and we had a big celebration for hers.
Tell us a memory from a birthday when you were a child.
I remember the little packages my dad would make to give to my classmates: a slice of cake wrapped in butter paper and two chocolate eclair sweets for each of my 50+ classmates.
How would you celebrate your birthday if money was no object?
I’d go on a long, long holiday with my husband and son. Maybe a cruise to the fjords and the Northern lights.

Oh gosh, I forgot to mention my 50th birthday trip to Istanbul. My son took care of all the arrangements. It was the best treat ever especially as I was battling depression at the time and didn’t feel like doing anything.

    Happy Birthday!!!
What is the most unique/fun/well enjoyed gift you’ve gotten for your birthday? My first Mac computer. I wanted it for Christmas but Hubster was a little late in ordering, but I didn’t know that. All I know was no laptop for Christmas. I froze him out for 2 weeks. The laptop arrived in time for my Jan 9th birthday.
What is your preferred dessert to celebrate your birthday? Banana Split Cake. Delicious!!!
What is your worst birthday memory? I don’t really have a bad one. The closet might be the time I had pneumonia for Christmas and birthday.
Tell us a memory from a birthday when you were a child. Nothing really stands out, but in my 20’s I started celebrating the entire month. LOL. Each weekend was a trip or event (drinking involved) in celebration with different friends. Now I sign up for food birthday freebies and eat out as much as I can. LOL!
How would you celebrate your birthday if money was no object? Australia!!!! But I hate flying.

  10. Hope your birthday was a happy one! I’ve gotten a lot of great presents over the years -mostly books and yarn 🙂 My preferred birthday treat is Funny Cake. Worst birthday memory is from the first year we were married. There had been a massive snowstorm a few days before, which was fun at first. But by the time my birthday rolled around , we were tired of shoveling and just generally fed up with things. Then he forgot my birthday, which put me in a mood. He didn’t remember until my parents, who weren’t plowed out, called to wish me a happy birthday. It all got made up a couple days later, but it was a pretty rotten day. When I was a kid, our family used to have little family birthday parties for us. We got to pick our favorite meal, got a cake and a few presents. The non-birthday child also got a small present, which I think was a jealousy-avoidance tactic. If money was no object, I would take DH and do a tour of Europe 🙂

    First, Happy, Happy Birthday!!🎉🎁🎂

What is the most unique/fun/well enjoyed gift you’ve gotten for your birthday? One year my family gave me pictures—DH had a local artist produce an original picture for my piano studio, and my girls did photo shoots and made a collage…I see them daily, and I love them.
What is your preferred dessert to celebrate your birthday? Key lime cheesecake, because it is hard to find here in SD, so I only get it once every 5-6 years.
What is your worst birthday memory? I can’t think of anything awful, there have been plenty of neutral birthdays over the years, but nothing bad that I remember.
Tell us a memory from a birthday when you were a child. I had one true birthday party as a child with cake and ice cream, school friends, etc. My mom had games and a scavenger hunt…I was amazed and thrilled! My mom had arthritis in her spine from age 27, so we never had parties or friends over, stuff like that, her pain level was too unpredictable, though we didn’t realize that until we were adults. That makes that party even more special.
How would you celebrate your birthday if money was no object? In a non-COVID world I would hop on a jet with my family and we would go visit all the places we have wanted to share with each other over the years. We’d be gone for months I think!

Happy Birthday, Karen!!! So…being so close to Christmas, do you get twice as many gifties, or half? haha!
One of the most unique gifts I ever received was a butterfly net. I lost many hours that summer chasing butterflies.
I love cherry pie. That is my favorite birthday dessert. Fresh cherries, tho!
I don’t have a bad birthday memory. That’s the truth.
I recall waking up one birthday morning to my sister and brother sitting on my bed, bearing gifts. One was a bug catcher. I was in HEAVEN!! (see a theme with the insects?)
I wouldn’t change anything about how I celebrate. I wake up with nothing planned and I let the day just be. I spend it on my deck, in the garden. Sometimes we have a big thunder storm. I love it.
