Knitting Insurance (or why I’m likely starting a project that will fail)

With Vary The Gate finished and blocking and One & Done waiting for a photo shoot I gave myself permission to cast on a new project. I know the baby blanket still needs to be finished. I will get back to it. First I must play with some different yarn.

When I was looking at the Calidez Vest pattern information on Ravelry I checked out the Yarn Ideas which kindly reminded me that I had 4 skeins of purple Reynolds Lopi. It’s deep stash that was given to me. I’ve had no idea what to use it for. A hat was my first thought ages back but really it seemed like a lot of yarn (440 yards) to just make a hat. So I dug it out, bought the Calidez vest pattern and knit a swatch.

Now I’m super close on yarn but I’m willing to take the chance. Because of this I’m going to soak the swatch attached to the rest of the skein, let it dry, measure it, rip it out and either knit another swatch if I’m really far off or start knitting the vest.

Will I get gauge or anything near it? Will the vest actually end up being the gauge of the swatch? I doubt both of these but I’m taking out the knitting insurance that I’ll be able to make it all work. Well, except maybe the amount of yarn. I’ve got what I’ve got and that’s got to work.
