I completed Vary The Gate just now. I’ll block it tomorrow. The pattern was a little thin on bind off instructions: BO loosely. That’s all it said so being lazy I googled easy loose bind off. I found a super easy bind off with just a little bit of stretch. The one I found requires *k2tog through back loop, slide stitch back to left hand needle, continue from * to the last stitch. It makes for a slightly stretchy bind off with a decorative chain at the edge. I’m filing this bind off away in my memory bank for the future.
I like using a k2tog bind-off for shawls because it does create a bit of a looser edge. If I use a traditional bind-off I have to go up a needle size because it tightens the edge if I use the needle size called for in the pattern (also, I knit tighter than I purl, so that’s an issue).

I might tink back the finish on the last shawl and try that. I just wore it tonight and hate how tight the bind off is!

I do a that bind off now and it works great. Nice edge, a little give but not too loose. Kind of slow, though… faster than picot or icord!

Anything is faster than i-cord! Sometimes it’s what is needed, though.

I used to hate it, but now I am becoming a fan as I see how it improves the knitted item as it’s worn. I even use it to add color to the edge of things I’ve already bound off for the color pop and a nice, clean finish on something I don’t want to sag like the top of a sock or the wrist of arm warmers.

The colors on this yarn are amazing! That is the bind off I learned when I started knitting. It always looks nice.😊

That is a really pretty bind off, and easy to do too! Looking forward to seeing your Vary the Gate blocked and done!

I came across that bind off on a pattern in the last year, and I like it too. Easy, looks nice, nice amount of stretch.
