Decisions: A Quiz

I don’t know how much different the cowl looks than the other day. I still have a couple more rows to finish the current section but it’s a long section so maybe there is a visible difference. There is a huge difference in the natural light in my living room these days. Fall leaves much of my house feeling dark and an overcast day like today makes it feel almost gloomy.

With today being Friday, the new clue for The Secret Handshake MKAL appeared in my email. I’m very excited to get back to it. I’m not well known for being on time when doing KALs. I often fall behind when I’m distracted by something else. I could very easily be distracted by the Klickitat Street cowl. I have less than a dozen rows to finish it and that is so tempting. Once that is done I have the yarn and patterns for my next two projects all queued up and ready to go. This got me thinking about how to proceed which made me wonder how you would proceed. So it’s time for a quiz about project management.

Feel free to answer in the comments or if you’re answering on your blog leave a link so we can all read your thoughts on project management.

  • Are you a one project at a time crafter or do you like a variety to suit your mood?
  • Do you reward yourself along the way with a new project after reaching a certain goal?
  • How do you decide which project to work on? Do you require that you work on a less loved project before you work on the one that is really firing you up?
  • How do you know you have too many things going at one time?
  • If you had to chose between a project that is nearly done and a new exciting one which would you pick? Are you a process crafter or a project crafter?

Here are my answers.

  • I have a three project rule. I like one that is more complex and one that is easy. Ordinarily I like the third to be socks but currently I have 2 cowls and the baby blanket so that is my self imposed limit.
  • I try very hard to stick to that three project rule but if I find myself in a situation where none of my projects would be appropriate I will cast on something new. For me it’s more about situation than reward. For example if all my projects are too large or complex to take out of the house I’ll go ahead and cast on some socks as a traveling project.
  • This is my dilemma right now. Do I finish the clue for the MKAL and stay on track with it or do I finish the Klickitat Street cowl and reward myself with a new project? I really should get back to the baby blanket because that little one will be born whether I have that blanket done or not. I’ve been dividing time between the two cowls and throwing in a couple of rows on the blanket but it may be time to switch that up and do more rows on the blanket to earn time with the cowls.
  • I know I have too many things going when I see no progress on anything and I know I’m working on things. This is why I started the three project rule. If you spend time working on all three there is a small amount of visible progress on each. When I was cast on crazy I tended to abandon projects and move on to something new the minute the whim hit. It was too easy to say yes to the new thing (which often involved buying new yarn) and dump the old thing into the UFO pile. I still have a pile of UFOs to prove this point.
  • I try to always finish something that is nearly done before casting on something new. The momentum of excitement about the new thing is often enough to overcome whatever mental road block there is with getting the old project finished. I have learned over time I am a process knitter not a project knitter. I am pleased to see something completed but the main excitement for me is being able to start something new.

Remember to leave a link if you’ll be answering on your blog or answer in the comments. I look forward to seeing what you have to say.

I typically don’t have more than 3 projects going at one time. More than 3 and I feel like I am treading water and not getting anything done. If you are within striking distance of a FO, I would say go for it. I knit on what I’m in the mood for. If I am feeling a little stalled out with a project, I will bring it to work with me. Having only one item available to knit during lunch means guaranteed progress.

I usually have at least 3 knit WIPs and a couple of other ones because I like variety eg some complicated fairisle or cable and a sit an watch TV one along with one using new techniques. I also do cross stitch and crochet and make things out of felt. I don’t understand the word boredom because it isn’t in my dictionary.

I craft for a living so I often have to abandon my own knitting to finish an order…..I currently have a plain navy cardigan on my lap and an abandoned vintage fairisle at my side!

  3. I ALWAYS have multiple projects going. Which one I pick up depends on mood and where I am – right now I’m finishing a pair of socks started and abandoned by my aunt, because it was what was within reach when I was sitting with a cat on my lap. Boring, except I have to figure out how she did the heel on the first sock, so they match. I’m working on Heelix socks; the heel was fun, but now it’s not enough to really keep my interest – also, it’s in the camper and I’m not. I’m working on a utilitarian sweater, reknit from wool salvaged from a previous utilitarian sweater I’d worn out. I need to unknit the tops of the Ravens purple socks for my nephew, and replace what turned out to be navy blue with the black it should have been – but I have to find what safe place I put them in first! There are a couple of other projects on needles; what started as a prayer shawl for a friend who didn’t live long enough to receive it, waiting for inspiration (although I may pick it up so I’ll have lace to play with); another shawl using up stash; I don’t like how it’s coming out and am discerning how to change it. I’ve been reading more, knitting less, as generally I knit while listening to public radio news – and that’s just too depressing now. But if a project is only an inch from completion, it moves to the top of the list – I like finishing things. And passing them on, or wearing them.

  4. I wouldn’t have two garment projects on the go but socks and a bigger item would be ok. But I have other crafts on the go, like felting or weaving or spinning.
Do you reward yourself along the way with a new project after reaching a certain goal? No, I’d rather just finish my project.
How do you decide which project to work on? Do you require that you work on a less loved project before you work on the one that is really firing you up? My one less loved project needs more brain power than I have at the moment so anything else is better at the moment.
How do you know you have too many things going at one time? Not likely as I haven’t had more than 3 WIPs.
If you had to chose between a project that is nearly done and a new exciting one which would you pick? Definitely the nearly done.
Are you a process crafter or a project crafter? Definitely project.

I used to be a three-WIP knitter and somehow, that’s freakin doubled.
Do you reward yourself along the way with a new project after reaching a certain goal?
I usually am wiped out after finishing a project and need to vegitate a bit, but may have other WIP’s around.
How do you decide which project to work on? Do you require that you work on a less loved project before you work on the one that is really firing you up?
Most of the time, by mood, sometimes by what should get done first.
How do you know you have too many things going at one time?
I look at all the bags lying around and think, good grief.
If you had to chose between a project that is nearly done and a new exciting one which would you pick?
Depends upon my mood probably but may finish the almost finished one.
Are you a process crafter or a project crafter?
    A project crafter.

I try to finish each time but I have had two projects going lately, one of them a beanie that took me a while to do the finishing touches 🤔 I love your insight about you with being a process, not a project knitter. Gives me something to think about…

  7. I usually have only one or two projects going at a time, along with a few sewing projects. There are times when one gets set aside, then may linger for a while. I would choose to start the sparkly new project, unless the almost finished is for someone else. I often think I am a process knitter, especially the planning part, but I do love my finished projects. In other words, I’m all over the place!

I have multiple projects it seems…right now there are two quilts being pieced while I drool over several other stitch alongside that I would love to start, but won’t until I get at least one finished. I have a hand quilting project going and one waiting in the wings, but just can’t get the nerve to start the second until I finish the first, I’m so close. With knitting, I have a large project going, and usually something smaller, like a sock, a blanket square or Christmas ornaments. If I get too many yarn bits in the basket, I will start a charity hat. Sewing projects are usually one at a time, as are embroidery/cross stitch, but there is usually one going all the time.
All the different types give me plenty of variety, and they are worked on with varying degrees of diligence, depending on my mood! I do love the process, but I often have deadlines for projects so that keeps me moving. I gift many of the things I make to family and close friends.

I try to discipline myself to finish one project before I cast on for the next. Or nothing will get done because that’s how I am. Right now, this has fallen by the wayside because I have a sock, a scarf and a shawl all going on simultaneously. I can already see the shawl marching way ahead, while the scarf sits looking sadly at me. But the shawl will reach a roadblock when I hit the lace part.
But this happened because the scarf has an intricate cable that is not easy to work while watching TV. And I was finally motivated to start the shawl – I’d fallen out in between with the person I was making it for! And the sock was to be done at my crochet club while sipping tea and eating cake 🙂 But we’re in lockdown again, so that sock will stay where it is for now.
I usually get stuck when I have to seam. I’d knit a jumper two years ago and it lay languishing till I finally seamed it last month. Ditto for a granny square blanket that is still awaiting its moment with the seaming needle.
This year has been about scarves. Easy mindless knitting, with the stitches and patterns throwing in the challenge I crave. No seaming.
I school myself to finish what I’m doing before I start a new project. I don’t know what that makes me – project or process. I guess I’m process in my ambitions and project in my real life. Sigh!

  11. Interesting quiz, as always! I will answer on my blog 🙂 Like you, I often bargain with myself to get things done, even though something else may be much more enticing at the moment!

*Looks at basket filled with a blanket wip and scarf wip and box of crochet pieces that could be turned into pencil cases and yarn currently sitting on bedside locker…* …Yup, definitely a one project at a time person 😀

I usually have a spinning project going, as well as a knitting project or 2 going, plus many other things in my head. Right now I am waiting to finish a spinning project (bison fiber) and then I will work on some carding. I also want to try weaving some dish towels on my 15″ rigid heddle loom, which is still new for me. I try not to have too many things going. I agree it is nice to have something small that is good for the car. We might do a snowbird trip this winter, so I am thinking that I need to focus more on carding and spinning now, because I can bring the knitting with me later. I can also bring the loom with me, it is small enough.
