A Quiz About Color

We are all artists. We use our supplies be they fiber, yarn, beads or whatever to create pieces that express our vision. This vision can have texture or color. Let’s talk about color.

Feel free to answer in the comments or if you’re answering on your blog leave a link so we can all read about your opinions on color and how it pertains to your crafting.

  • What is your favorite color? How is this color reflected in your crafting?
  • Do you prefer bright colors or more subdued shades?
  • Does your color mood shift with the seasons? Do you carry one color all year and just change the accent color?
  • Is there a color you avoid? Or maybe it’s underrepresented in your crafting?
  • When you pick out your crafting supplies how important is color to you? Is it the first thing you consider or is it a bit further down the list?
  • Do you ever consciously choose a different color palette just for the change?

Here are my answers.

  • I love all shades of blue though the dusty middle shades are my favorite. I do buy blue yarn but not as much as I used to. I buy way more gray than any other shade. It is a neutral that fits well into my closet.
  • I prefer more subdued colors for clothing, except socks. I want my socks to be as wildly colorful as possible.
  • My color choices are pretty much the same all year round but I do find myself reaching for extra bright colors in January and February when the days are shorter and darker in my area.
  • I think all colors have a place but I find that I don’t reach for yellow very often. When I do it is a very soft buttery shade.
  • I would say that color is often the first thing I notice when looking at patterns. If the color catches my eye I’ll give the pattern a look. I have passed on something because the color in the pattern turns me off but later I see someone else’s version and I revisit the pattern. Color is second when I pick out yarn. I’m all about the way the yarn feels first.
  • I’m trying to be more open to bright colors for accessories like shawls and cowls. They’re a nice way to add a pop of color to an outfit without committing to a hot pink or lime green sweater. I’m not ready to go there, yet.

Do you have any other thoughts on color? It’s such a huge topic. We’ll have to revisit it again in the future.

I like these questions, got me thinking…maybe yellow, orange and red are colours I’m less likely to pick.

Okay, I’ll try to answer your quiz.
    1. Green has always been my favorite color, but I rarely choose green yarn. I do find myself using green more liberally in my home decor and watercolor work.
    2. I love working with bright colors, especially red, orange, gold and purple. I mostly wear grey and blue.
    3. My color choices seem to remain consistent throughout the year.
    4. I avoid black yarn, because it’s so hard to see the stitches while knitting. I don’t use brown much either, except when I knit for my daughter.
    5. Like you, color is usually my second consideration, following suitability of the fiber choice. When choosing quilting fabric, it’s easier to make color the main consideration.
    6. Yes, I will choose a different palette as a change of pace. Who knows, it may spark more interesting choices for other aspects of the project.

  3. Mostly I think my favourite colour is blue, but sometimes it’s red. As I mainly knit garments for myself, I do quite often choose shades of blue for the yarn, but for other crafting items like notions, any colour goes.
    Absolutely love bright colours.
I don’t think my colour mood shifts all that much with the seasons, but I do find some colours look best in certain lights and the light changes with the seasons. Burgundy looks drab all summer long then you get up one morning and suddenly it looks super.
I mainly I avoid black and all the drab shades – olive, khaki, oatmeal. I look spectacularly awful in camel. I never used to like orange but I’m rather coming round to it in my old age.
The colour is the first thing I consider with a project; the yarn weight is the next consideration and from there comes the pattern choice.
I occasionally buy a ‘way-out’ colour of yarn for a change, and I’ve had some great successes stepping outside my comfort zone. That said, I still go for shades of a ‘way-out’ colour that co-ordinate well with my wardrobe.

Chartreuse green, see first answer LOL, colors change with seasons, although I don’t Have any set palette, I don’t tend to buy gray, color is key, but pattern is a close second. I guess I tend to buy the fiber/fabric and then match to a pattern. Nope!

  7. What a great idea for a blog post! Instead of answering here, I will create a post and link you. Love this, and I am going to have fun with it because playing with color is probably my favorite part of any project. 🙂

  8. I really enjoyed this post… and I need to think more about the colors I use and am attracted to… oh… like you… with clothing I prefer subtle… except socks… although as of lately I haven’t worn “colorful” socks since I have been lazy and my wife buys mine…. I think she prefers more subtle traditional colors… (black grey brown). I like stripy colorful socks… ones that everyone is happy my trousers cover…

Just one answer to all your Qs. I love colours, the more the better. That’s why I like crocheting granny squares. I choose colours according to my mood. I like creating different combos. I also like to use colours in the same palette in one project. I get easily bored if I were to knit just one colour, which is probably why my sock is stuck. I love variegated yarn for all the above reasons!

What a great quiz! My favorite color is blue/purple. I love periwinkle blue. I knit is cool tones, blues, pinks, purples, and am not often attracted to yellows or greens, though I’ve tried to broaden my horizons. I choose grays before browns, and am always on the hunt for a stone colored khaki instead of the tans!

Green!! I love all shades of green! That being said, I absolutely love all color. I tend to shy away from neons and yellow since they wash me out. For sweaters and larger garments, I prefer a solid with a little pop of color.

  19. I was going to post this, but the week continues to misbehave so I will give you my answers here.
    1. What is your favorite color? How is this color reflected in your crafting?
umm… pink and rosy colors. Pink goes well with grey and black, so I keep knitting in those colors. Blue and gold look nice with grey and black too, so I keep knitting in those colors. At the end of the day, I’m not knitting as much pink as you would think, but it is my favorite.

    2. Do you prefer bright colors or more subdued shades? Subdued, except for those sneaky bright pinks and purples that I keep buying to knit with the greys…

    3. Does your color mood shift with the seasons? Do you carry one color all year and just change the accent color? Nope. I am immune to the seasons color wise. Well, maybe I am lying here. When fall comes those colors really are compelling, but I’m buying them because that’s when they are being sold. 🙂

    4. Is there a color you avoid? Or maybe it’s underrepresented in your crafting? Green. Why would anyone voluntarily knit with green?

    5. When you pick out your crafting supplies how important is color to you? Is it the first thing you consider or is it a bit further down the list? Oh, it is all about the color.

    6. Do you ever consciously choose a different color palette just for the change? Nope. It’s all about the color and how I feel at the moment, and how much color envy I have for another person’s project.

It probably has to depend upon my mood but my eyes do tend to gravitate towards blues, purples, and greens. But if it’s Harry Potter inspired colorways, I am all over them and the colors don’t matter as much.
