Sock It To Me Monday On Tuesday, Again

One day I will get my shit together. Yes. I’m posting a day late again. I’ve got a reason but it too shows how much my shit isn’t together.

Sunday I sat down to bind off the cuff of the sock. I had everything I needed to get the socks completely finished and planned to get the photo done and a post written. Well, do you think I could figure out which stretchy bind off I’d used on the first one? Did I make a note so I’d remember? No and no. I was tired and pretty aggravated with myself so I picked a different topic and threw together a post. I’d work on the socks Monday.

Anyway, the pattern is Double Heelix by Jeny Staiman. The pattern is available for free from the above link. The pattern has their highest difficulty rating, extra spicy and in my opinion it deserves that rating. The sock is knit from the center of the heel using 4 yarn ends. From there the foot is knit and then the leg. The only part I found difficult was the heel. The foot and leg are straight forward standard sock knitting.

I’d describe the heel as a short row heel but knit with two colors creating a spiral. Once I could picture in my mind what I was doing I found it easier to know what to do with which piece of yarn. I did follow some of the recommendations on Ravelry to close up little holes that appear when changing yarns.

I am not normally a fan of toe up socks. I have trouble getting a good fit but since this pattern is really a foot down/cuff up hybrid it fits really well. I used Sweet Georgia’s elastic bind off for binding off the ribbing. It is available on YouTube. I found it easy to do and still plenty stretchy. It flairs a bit but on a sock that doesn’t matter since it’s quite fitted. I would use this bind off method for toe up socks again.

The yarn is JulieSpins Half-Pint in magenta (the dark) and orchid (the light). I’ve used this yarn before and I will use it again. It is a light fingering weight that is beautifully dyed.

This is the third and final project for the second semester of Loopy Grad School. The requirement for this project was to knit a pair of socks with unusual construction.

Pardon the less than stellar photo. The Husband isn’t great with a camera and knows nothing about knitting. He did the best he could with my picky instructions: photo of the socks only, not my pants, legs or ass. I should have specified having the helix show.
