Starter

The photo isn’t particularly exciting.

After neglecting my sourdough starter for months I decided to try reviving it. The pickings at the grocery store lately have been slim in the bread department. Making my own bread seems like the best way to go.

I fed it this afternoon and returned to feed it again four hours later. There were a few bubbles which was an okay sign but the best sign was the smell. It has a fantastic fresh sour smell. It’s hard to believe it was so badly neglected. Stay tuned. Maybe there will be actual photos of bread later in the week.

Thank you for the well wishes for Myles. He had a fun birthday. H sent him some treats that he just loves and a new toy that he spent hours playing with.

  1. I started a sourdough starter yesterday… I’m doing it from scratch and hopefully it will work. My directions say that it will take three days before I know if it’s working… here’s hoping my starter looks and smells like yours in a few days.

  2. I tried doing this once. I think I managed to kill it right at the start. I decided to just do normal yeast bread. Hope yours springs back to life and vigour.

  3. Not doing sourdough, but I’m baking our bread now. Mainly for breakfast, we often just have toast. I think I’ll keep doing it, even after all this is over.

Home made bread is the best! I didn’t have much luck with my sourdough, but I imagine if yeast gets short, I’ll be motivated enough to get it really going! That’s encouraging that your is reviving so quickly! Can’t wait to see the first byproduct!!

  5. I love how a neglected starter can bounce back with love. I’ve been baking more sourdough lately. I have yeast, but taking the time with sourdough makes me happpy.

Sorry I missed his birthday!! Happy belated to the boy. What better way to spend your day than with treats.

I have tried sourdough starters 5 times now. Nothing good happened. I think because my house was too cold. Well, now that we are in the mid 80’s outside, my house is no longer ‘cold’ and the starter should love it. I am going to try it again. I think sourdough is the best tasting of all breads. Otherwise, I make our ‘normal’ bread twice a week in the bread machine. Glad to hear Myles had a nice bday.

I tried this week to do the same, but unfortunately after careful care and feeding all week, I made a leaven last night, and today, nothing – no rising, no bubbling, and it won’t float on water… :(. So my batch must not be viable. Time to start again. Good luck with yours!

  9. Your sourdough looks great! I am thinking about trying it as well. Peer pressure! 😉
Glad Myles had a nice birthday with good treats and a new toy 🙂

  10. Ah so exciting. I am jealous I’d love to start a sour dough starter but our stores are out of flour and I’m worried I won’t be able to keep feeding it.

I remember the days long ago when I lived in Washington state and I never went without a sourdough starter. For now I don’t need the extra calories but I loved making sourdough biscuits Yum

Oh, I disagree. That is a very exciting photo! Any baker would agree.

I suck at keeping sourdough starter alive, so when I went over to King Arther Flour to buy sour cream blueberry scone mix — thanks for that! — I also bought a bag of their instant sourdough flavor. Cannot wait to see how that works out! I bake bread in the bread machine b/c I am lazy plus have somewhat arthritic hands.

  14. I just began my own starter for lockdown! Bread didn’t really go well, but my first crumpets were pretty darn good.
