Knitting Fashion Quiz

Alissa‘s post yesterday was about a really cool knitting book. She included a little fashion quiz. I am not one to give fashion advice since I wear mostly comfortable casual clothes from the thrift store. But I am always happy to share my opinion.

Here’s a knitting fashion quiz for you:

1. Do you think it’s true “if you wore it the first time around, you shouldn’t wear it the second (or third) time around?”

2. Do you believe there is a “first time around” anymore? Have you seen fashion produce anything new lately that you would like to wear?

3. Do you knit things you would never wear just because you want to knit them? Do you gift them afterward?

Here are my thoughts.

  1. No. Wear what you like. If you are comfortable in it and it makes you happy I say wear it.
  2. I don’t follow fashion. I’m all about comfort though I do prefer a classic timeless style. Give me jeans, a turtleneck and a cardigan and I’m set.
  3. I have a pile of knit items I don’t wear. When I knit them I thought I’d wear them but for one reason or another I don’t. They live in the cedar chest I inherited. I have been known to pull something out of there and gift it. But I’m pretty fussy about who I gift to so it doesn’t happen often.

      I agree – wear what’s comfortable.
Question; have you ever knit and gifted BABY clothes or blankets that had to be hand washed?

      • I have gifted baby things and suggested that one piece be hand washed. It was a February baby sweater by Elizabeth Zimmermann knit in a merino nylon sock yarn. I knew the yarn would survive the washer but I didn’t think the gull lace would. The blankets have been acrylic blends like Plymouth Encore which is totally washable.

      1. I believe in “everything that’s old is new again” – fair isle sweaters are coming back in style. But did they ever leave? I like classics for myself and although they may fall out of style in the fashion world, for lovers of classic style (think Talbots), it never leaves.
      2. I don’t think there is too much first time around. Some, but usually it’s a twist on a classic or past popular style.
      3. I usually knit just to knit. Socks for myself in a very basic pattern. Hats for my husband because he likes them. I made a few sweaters and tops for myself over the years and some immediately frogged and re-purposed the yarn! Others wore for a few years and then good-willed them. I’m contemplating passing along all my knitting stuff because I just don’t do it much and when I do, I make stupid mistakes because I didn’t read the pattern carefully (like the hat I’m doing now!). But then there is one sweater I wore out I loved so much that maybe one last hurrah I’ll make again 😂.

Skinny jeans, V-neck sweater, and cowls for me!! Or Pajamas, but only indoors for the PJs.

    4. I’ve always loved fashion, although being short means fashion doesn’t always love me; I love to read the fashion magazines and see photos of the runway shows. A lot of fashion is silly, though, just to be different. I totally believe in wearing what you like and I’ve always liked to dress up perhaps a bit more than my friends and family. If you wore it first time round and still love it, wear it again (better still, don’t stop wearing it). I think what makes a piece current or new to fashion is more about a particular combination of cut/colour/fabric rather than the essence of the piece. I would probably like some of Victoria Beckham’s trousers if my legs grew magically to a suitable length! I only knit things I want to wear. I mainly knit things I want to wear the minute I start knitting them, which isn’t wise when it takes you months to knit!

Heckin no. I have pieces in my wardrobe that are vintage/passed down and stuff from years ago. I used to be more fashionable but after moving to the suburbs I’ve gotten lazy/hermit/I’d rather sew my clothes.

      2. Do you believe there is a “first time around” anymore? Have you seen fashion produce anything new lately that you would like to wear?
      No, I don’t think so.

      3. Do you knit things you would never wear just because you want to knit them? Do you gift them afterward?
No, but I have a few items that need to be frogged b/c I don’t wear them.
