Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow

Today is my birthday. Being a person born during the holidays is hard. Everyone has other priorities. I get it. Over the years I’ve made a deal with myself. This day I take off from holiday prep. It is my day. There is no shopping, cooking, wrapping, card writing or any other activity that involves the holidays. The plan is to mostly take it easy, have lunch out with The Husband, do some knitting, bake a cake (every birthday requires cake) and enjoy some quality time with Myles. Basically do what I want. When I was a kid and I was behaving in a self-centered way making demands with no thought of anyone else my mother would say “What do you think this is, your birthday?” Today I’m going to say “Why yes it is!”

Yesterday was card writing day. This is a chore to me. I don’t enjoy it. Over the years I’ve whittled my list down to the few people I have to send to and a few I want to send to. I enlisted The now retired Husband to contribute by sending to his people. It made things go quicker.

Tomorrow will begin the marathon of baking. I’ve got a small list of people I bake for and a yummy new recipe they’re going to love. Then I’ll make the list of baking supplies for our holiday festivities. We aren’t sure exactly what our plans are at this point but cookies and pies will be part of it.

  6. Happy Birthday! I am also a December baby – I used to get money for my birthday which I would then spend on other people for Christmas. It royally sucked!

  7. Birthdays this time of year are hard! My grandmother was the 24th, my grandson is the 28th, my son the 29th, and my mom was the 30th! It’s hard to make the B- day special, and so hard to do a part when the kids were small. I used to have a 1/2 year party for my son in June. šŸ˜€ I know you already know this! Sorry, but glad you made a day for yourself.

I still haven’t put up my tree yet, but I did some baking yesterday. Im really dragging this year.

Have a great last few days of prep.

  8. It was my birthday yesterday. My parents always ensured that I had a ‘proper’ birthday celebration and the whole Christmas thing didn’t really start until after my day. My husband’s birthday is just after new year so we make much more fuss about these and have a quiet and fuss free Christmas. Happy birthday and enjoy your own ‘fuss’. šŸ‘šŸ˜Š

Hope you have a very happy and relaxing birthday. My husbandā€™s birthday is on 23rd and sonā€™s on 24th. Itā€™s a bit of a nightmare trying to find a restaurant thatā€™s not got over-the-top decorations, loud Christmas music and turkey dinner dominating the menu… and woe betide the relative who tried to give son a joint Christmas /birthday present. Enjoy your day x

My granddaughter’s birthday is on the 15th, and they always ALSO celebrate her half-birthday in June. Maybe you could do the same!!

  17. Happy Birthday! Enjoy your special day! The twin granddaughters (11th) BD was yesterday. They have a true birthday celebration but it is hard to get together with their friends as so many other things are going on this time of the year. My daughter would like to have a half birthday celebration in June but her husband disagrees.

Happy Birthday! It was mine last week and I was of a similar mind…..take the day off and do something I love so for me that involved shopping and eating! I really enjoyed myself. I leave my Birthday cards up for a week so that means Christmas cards have to wait and all the Christmas decorations but I feel it’s an important message for little ones to learn that Birthdays are unique to the person celebrating and shouldn’t be less important just because they’re in holiday season! My Mum said to me one year ‘would you like one big present for Christmas and Birthday or 2 smaller ones?’ I replied that I wanted to celebrate my Birthday too.

  29. What they said – Happy Birthday (a little late; Christmas triumphs over keeping up with e-mail!) and glad you gave yourself a day.

I stopped sending Christmas cards years ago. For me, the cards are to remind people I care about that they are not forgotten; I may send a postcard while on my travels, or a thinking-of-you note at some point in the year. As long as everyone knows i remember them and care, what difference does time of year make?? I’d rather be knitting!

Sending you belated birthday wishes, I had a child born on the 18th of December & childhood parties were a sad affair. Everyone was so busy many times only one person showed up so I changed her birthday to June 18 and she had a summer party which was a blast every year. I would give her a birthday present on her real birthday but she was able to have a fun party Midsummer
