I had a little time to finish the gusset decreases on the sock today. The leg looks so nice with the stripes. This yarn isn’t self striping so when it did stripe I was pleasantly surprised. I knew things would be weird at the heel and gusset but I hoped the stripes would return for the foot. Dang it. They didn’t. Things are looking blotchy on the foot. It really doesn’t matter. I suspect these will be bed socks. The yarn is sport weight so they’ll be a little thick in my shoes. They will be nice to wear to bed on a cold night.
The wonkiness of the yarn on the foot doesn’t bother me one bit. I just like seeing what crazy thing variegated yarn does. How about you? Do you like your yarn to be well behaved or do you enjoy when crazy things happen?
At least the wonky part is in your shoe! I am always amazed at how hand dyed sock yarn works up. Often, it’s the heel I like best, which tells me that I do like well behaved yarn best. I am working with some now that I hope will work into lovely regular stripes. I do toe up and it isn’t neatly striped yet but I have more increasing to do.

I think they look great, really unique! I use a lot of yarn like this and it’s amazing how different it looks as the rib of a large jumper and the rim of a small hat.

What a surprise! I have never using striping or variegated anything, except for some dish cloths, now I am going to be wondering!

I love when things surprise me, but depending on the item, I would prefer a little predictability in larger more visible areas.
That being said, I think your socks look super! If the second sock has a similar heel, they would look fabulous with clogs.

It looks like they might spiral back into control. Regardless, it’s still pretty. I prefer some predictability in my yarn though that’s not always the case.

This sock would stress me out so much. I’m glad you’re able to enjoy it in spite of it surprising you! ♥

Behave only! Don’t like surprises!

I love that your sock is well-behaved on the top (where the world will see it so well-behaved!), and then it’s crazy on the bottom (where only you will know what’s going on!)! 🙂 I guess I would lean more toward letting the yarn do whatever it wants to do – it’s a surprise and I like surprises!

Originally I thought “oh no!” But I even like how the stripes are on the bottom and the tan on top. Maybe like you’re standing on the earth, looking at the sun…

I think it looks cool! It is nifty how different the yarn looks on different parts of the sock. Whether they are bed socks or things to wear out, they are great looking socks 🙂

I like it when yarn surprises me. I like any creative surprises. I don’t like surprise parties though. I think your sock is lovely!

I think it adds a little quirkiness to it!! I wear knitted socks inside my wellies – so, as long as they keep my feet warm, the stripes can go where they like 😉

Your sock looks awesome! Love the striping. I guess I like my yarn to behave, but if the surprise look is a good look (like your stripes) I’d be happy 🙂

I haven’t had issues with sock yarn colorway wise. I know how striped yarn will behave when knitting a standard slip stitch and gusset heel. I haven’t used too many variegated ones, probably only one, my very first pair from VOGUE Knitting Live, LA.
