FO On Monday: Cowl Edition

Finally it is done. I started this back in January though it feels to me like I’ve been knitting it forever. I did learn a few things so that means it was a worthwhile project.

  • Read the pattern. Don’t just print out the chart and go. Guess which I did? I cast on and bound off with the same needle I knit the body with. I wasn’t supposed to. The edge is going to curl. I might try curing that with a bit of elastic thread. Also I was supposed to cast on and bind off with the purple (contrasting color). I didn’t.
  • The entire time I knit this I questioned why I was knitting it. Colorwork really isn’t something I enjoy knitting. Blame the evil stockings. Unfortunately I really like the way it looks. It’s really hard to mesh those two things.

The pattern is Cowl Latvian Blooms by Dela Hausmann. The yarn is Cascade Heritage solids in primavera and Italian plum. I just love the flowers. They are why I knit this project.

This project is for The Great Loopy Knitting Challenge and for my own personal challenge of knitting 9 skeins of stash yarn in 2018. This project counts as 1 skein used.

  1. Hi Karen. I had a similar experience with a garment I knitted a wee while ago (see https://theeclectichandcrafter.com/2016/10/31/the-finished-garment/). It was a reminder that no matter how long I’ve been knitting I still need to remember the basics. Congratulations on finishing your project. Karen

  12. It is beautiful. I hate it when something I don’t enjoy knitting turns out so pretty I feel I need to keep that technique up.

It turned out beautifully, and I’m so glad you finished it AND like it! I think color work is that way for everyone. You love the pattern, mouth it can be a real slog, so it’s important to to have other diversions to give you a break. 😄

The shawl that I recently finished took five tries before I got it right. With 361 stitches on the needle I thought I would go crazy every time I had to unravel it. The last time I was a good 6 inches into the project when I discovered that I didn’t read a very important instruction and I ended up with 71 too many stitches on my needle.

I noticed this entry featured at the bottom of the Sept 8, 2019 issue and was entranced by the photo. I love it so much, I went to Ravelry and downloaded it (free, no less!) and plan on doing it ASAP. I find color work really engaging and it is just what my bored brain needs.
