Anyone who has soaked red yarn knows the high probability of “blood in the water” when you’re preparing to block. I know it’s going to happen. I planned ahead for it to happen, gray as the paired color for stripes to avoid catastrophe. And yet my heart immediately jumps into my throat and I feel the panic that comes with the thought that all my hard work will be ruined. I soaked and rinsed twice and then just ran the water over the shawl. It was still letting go of a small bit of dye. Good grief! How much water is this going to take? I gave up and never did get all the loose dye.

Oh, wow! It’s beautiful! I have heard of someone who soaks their colorful yarns BEFORE they start knitting, which sounds like a good idea, but I’m not sure I have that much motivation.

ahh yes, the darned red. I think you were smart to match it with gray. I made some lovely red and white mittens once. Used vinegar in the rinse water, was ever so careful, but still, I now have red and white and pink mittens.

Someone in the knitting group I belong to recommends adding vinegar to the water. I would google it for amounts.
