Naknicromo Day 30: Crafts You’d Like To Learn

If you use the search button on my blog and search the words “spin” or “spindle” you’ll see that I have expressed interest in the past in learning to spin. I think most knitters get the urge once they’ve been exposed to it. It’s like a rampant virus at fiber festivals. I caught that bug a few times and bought a couple (well, three) of spindles and fiber. I’ve tried a few times but it hasn’t stuck. I make it through park & draft and then I keep dropping the spindle. When this happened for the hundredth time I briefly thought about a wheel. I haven’t tried spinning on one. I think that would trigger an impulse purchase. I don’t have room for a wheel at this point and it would really eat into my knitting time. Famous last words. We’ll have to see how long I hold out.

I can say that spinning does absolutely eat into knitting time. But there is also an enormous amount of satisfaction from knitting something with your handspun yarn.

  2. Deb from Araignee sent me a drop spindle and some roving. I was all thumbs. I have it still, but I think I need to sit with someone for a few hours and learn .. Or not at all. I have enough to do to knit right now!!!

I tried spindle spinning, and had the same experience you did – just couldn’t; get it. But when I tried the wheel, it came easily. So maybe – ? And they make fairly small wheels that fold up for storage. Just sayin’! I hope you get to learn someday. 🙂

I’d like to learn tatting. Next month, I will take a class on drop spinning. It will be interesting to see if I can do it and if I like it.

  5. I’ve signed up for a class to learn how to hand dye yarn. But I’ve also considered spinning. Since I’m a bit ADD with my crafting, I want to learn how to do it ALL, I’m trying to show a bit of restraint. But the lady who teaches the class also spins, so I think it likely I will sign up for a class with her sometime, just to give it a try.
