As I’ve mentioned in the past I prefer to knit in bed while watching tv. It’s been a while since I’ve knit a shawl with beads and I don’t think I’ve ever knit one with cables. That means I need multiple tools to go along with my yarn, needles and pattern. I’m having a hard time keeping track of everything and keeping it at hand while not dropping stitches. I’ll be here fumbling until I get the rhythm of the project.

On day one I didn’t lose any:) They’re 6/0 size beads so they are pretty visible. Now the cable needle is another story. It keeps slipping under the covers. My husband won’t be happy if he finds that in the night:(

No, I bet he won’t be! I have not mastered knitting in bed – are you sitting up? I can crochet in bed, but I rarely do. I just seem to wind up in the living room in my favorite chair. I can hear the things I drop hit the wooden floor that way. 🙂

Sometimes I use a little tray with a beading mat to help corral the beading supplies. Also, remind me to give you a piece of special dental floss that works great for knitting with beads – it allows you to load up several beads on part of the floss so that you don’t have to fiddle with getting a bead out of the tube.

Once you have a little more fabric knit, you can stick your cable needle & bead threader through the fabric. I also like to use project bags that will stay open when I put them down (or I use a basket) so everything is corralled in that. I can’t wait to see more of the FO!

I can’t imagine juggling yarn, beads, pattern, and a cable needle while sitting in bed — let alone do all that and follow a TV program! 😉

Funny you mention this! I found some beads from my last bead knitting project in my sofa when I was cleaning. If you’re applying the beads with a tiny crochet hook, my “trick” was to use the bead tube as a way to not spill anything. I just dipped the hook into the tube to catch a bead. Coincidentally, my last beading project also involved cables. My cables were narrow enough to not use a cable needle, which was nice because: one less thing to lose in the sofa! If your cables are 3 stitches or less wide you can google how to make cables without the cable needle and worry about one thing less, I suppose.
