I know that recently I have been knitting a lot of shawls and shawlettes and really I’ve tried to wear them but I’m afraid to admit that they just aren’t me. They are bulky and don’t stay put when wrapped around my neck. They aren’t practical to wear with a jacket. I end up looking like I’m all boobs or have a hunchback. I decided to give a gator/cowl a try. It will sit right around my neck keeping away the chill and look stylish and accessorized without being too fashion forward. The pattern is Later Gator by Amanda Berka. I am knitting it on size 6 needles with Elsebeth Lavold Silky Wool in color 14. The pattern is well written and easy to remember. The yarn is soft and almost feels like suede. The yarn and pattern are a perfect match for a soft but interesting cowl.

That’s a very nice natural colour! I’m your opposite, I think … I haven’t tried cowls yet, because they seem so impractical to me. 😉 But I love shawls! I usually knit them with fingering weight, however, so they aren’t as MUCH to stuff into your collar. 😀

I too haven’t tried cowls. I do however love small shawls made of fingering yarn. I wear them with a fairly open at the neck coat, so there is hardly any bulk under the coat, just the ends, which makes the shawl stay put. Your cowl looks lovely so far. I hope it proves more practical for you!

I adore cowls. I think they’re timelessly and incredibly fashionable. Though, my fashion sense might not be as current as it could be. 😀 You’ve chosen a beautiful pattern. It’s going to be lovely. I hope you love the result.

I’ve never had luck with cowls. I do better with really wide scarves than anything. I’ve only got one shawl so I’m not sure how that works but, you know, we’ll see (it’s not cold enough here yet to warrant wearing it for more than five minutes).

The color is great. I am not a big shawl fan too. I love the one I.made but I’ve only worn it once because it’s hard to keep it on in the right place.

Your cowl is coming along nicely! It is a very pretty pattern, especially with that yarn. I do love cowls – knitting them and wearing them! You’ll be wearing your cowl by the end of the week – just in time for the cold weather!

Love shawls, but understand how some have a love hate relationship with them. A cowl will be cozy and not get in your way as much.

That looks like a lovely knit. It’s really hard to find the balance between working what feels right on the body, especially when we’re in between seasons, and what patterns catch our eyes. I don’t mind scarves or cowls – and years ago, I always wore store-bought – crazy printed scarves – Indian, Eastern European etc. I was more enthusiastic about clothes and looking a certain way, fashion conscious then – now I’m all about the practicality.
I hope you find the right combo that works for you. Perhaps the scarves and shawls are more of a spring/summer thing, rather than fall/winter.
