Not as I do. Knit a gauge swatch. Wash and block it. Then cast on and knit your sweater. I didn’t do any of this.
And I still ended up with a fantastic sweater that fits and looks pretty good. I love it! The yarn, Cascade superwash sport was very nice to work with though it really grew a lot when I blocked it. The sleeves alone grew a good 3 inches. The pattern, Topeka, is very well written. I will knit another one or more. I used some of the hints on Ravelry and they worked out really well except for the button placement. I ended up with 11 buttons instead of the 7 I should have. I like the look though. The one thing that really helped more than anything else was theย Knit to Flatter class I took on Craftsy. I took all the measurements that Amy suggests and then made the sweater to my shape.
As happy as I am with my sweater I am sad to see Camp Loopy 2013 come to an end. I really enjoyed having a plan for knitting set out for me and I ended up with three finished items that I really love. Next summer I plan to participate in Camp Loopy 2014. I hope you’ll consider joining in.

Yay! First to see it in the flesh and first to see it on your blog! Sometimes there ARE advantages to being woken by a baby… I can’t wait to see more of this sweater in an everyday setting. It looks so well and the color is subtly cool.

That’s fantastic! It looks fabulous!! Congrats on finishing ๐ My project is drying as we speak…it took a lot to get it done. By about 1/2 way through I’d had enough and had to force myself to finish!

Wow! It looks great! I really like all the buttons and am glad it ended up the way it did. I’m glad you had such a good time at camp this summer. Maybe I’ll join you there next year.

Lovely sweater! I was just thinking of a sweater this morning, but I’m terrified of getting it to fit, and even more terrified of the garment growing after I’m done ๐ I’ve looked at Camp Loopy, but some how the summer months just completely get away from me!

I like your sweater. I’m sure you’ll get a lot of enjoyment out of it. And I’m knitting a cowl with the 220 superwash and I’ve decided I’m not too fond of it, because I think it’s too splinty. Do you have this problem?

Awesome sweater!! Wish I could wear pullovers, but alas, this stage in life demands cardis that can be ripped off when the heat hits! LOL. Wear it with pride my friend.

That sweater looks fantastic! Great job, you almost validated me with the no swatching, and then I saw you took the Craftsy class. So … I see you are skilled AND clever! Happy Long weekend knitting.

Lovely sweater. The button details are fabulous. Of course, I’m one of those people who love sleeves a little longer in case my hands get cold.

The sweater looks great! Love the front placket and buttons. Looks really comfy, too. I often get lazy and skip the wash & block part of swatching.

Whoo Hoo! Topeka is finished! It looks awesome and the color is just excellent too ๐
As for the buttons … well I think it looks perfectly right; if you hadn’t mentioned it … I would have not known, unless I had the pattern itself.
Maybe next year you could warn us a bit in advance of when Camp Loopy starts? If you remember.
It’s funny that you mention that you enjoyed having 3 pre-planned projects (PPP) as it were laid out …. been thinking about something like this myself lately.
Great job!
