A Baking Experiment

I have really had an itch to bake lately but it’s been so hot and humid that I didn’t want to turn on the oven. We got a break in the heat yesterday and I took the opportunity to get my electric mixer out and make some cookies.

When I went shopping the other day I was looking at the chocolate chips comparing what they were offering. I was at Whole Foods so the choices were a bit more upscale than what I normally see at Market Basket. I had recently watched a few shows on the Food Channel or maybe it was Cooking Channel (or maybe Travel Channel) that talked about chocolate and I remember them mentioning the Guittard brand. I grabbed a bag of their regular semi sweet chips.

I decided to make the original chocolate chip cookie recipe off the back of the package which to me looked pretty much the same as the Toll House recipe on the back of the Nestle’s bag. The cookies taste very good, similar to the ones I normally make. The chocolate does have a deeper more complex flavor that I really liked. I must say no one else noticed that I used different chocolate but then they can’t tell the different between Coke and Pepsi or Hood milk and store brand milk.

There was a show on recently about ice cream so I picked up some heavy cream when I was shopping and put the parts of the ice cream maker in the freezer. I’m looking forward to ice cream sandwiches made with homemade chocolate chip cookies and homemade ice cream. I also expect to gain a few pounds this weekend. Damn you cable TV and all your tasty programming.

I too plan to make ice cream this weekend!
I usually use Ghirardelli chocolate chips, except if Nestle are on super-sale. I love Ghirardelli for all my baking chocolate (except that one time with the eclairs when it was too bitter…)

Guittard is fantastic. I’ve made cupcakes with Hershey’s cocoa powder and there isn’t a lot of chocolate flavor. I used the Guittard Dutch process powder and what a difference.

Karen … I have to say …. as I was sitting waiting for the post to load (snore snore on dial-up) I’m reading along and by the end … I was laughing out loud, clutching my sides! You have a most wicked sense of humor and turn of phrase. gotta love it! Happy munching on the delicious delights …. ohhh homemade ice-cream sandwiches! I am jealous!

And whaddya mean they can’t taste the difference between Coke and Pepsi? Seriously?! Pepsi has wayyy more sugar whereas Coke has a metallic taste. Hmmm …. oh well … enjoy! 🙂
