WIP Wednesday: Plates In The Air

For the last little while (maybe a year or so) I have been dealing with a lot. Everything has had to be very fluid, no schedules because things can change just like that. Everyday brings something new and my last minute reorganizing skills have had a real workout. I feel like the guy with the plates spinning on the top of the sticks. I’ve got to keep everything in motion or it will all fall apart. I’m afraid things are starting to get like that with my knitting. I’ve got more things on the needles than I usually do and a few UFOs that are weighing heavily on my mind. But with my freshly honed skills I am handling it better than I usually would.

After the drama of the sock I was working on the week before last I decided to cast on a simple stockinette sock and just enjoy the round and round of it. It was the perfect compliment to last week when I read as many blogs as I could squeeze into my limited free time. The yarn is Trekking XXL. The ball band is missing but I think it’s color 91 which is a red and blue. It isn’t anywhere near as pink as it looks in the photo.

I have cast on and knit about 30 rows of Celestarium. The pattern is really well written and so far I’m enjoying it a lot. See the beads? I’ll try to get a better photo when I can spread it a little better without having stitches pop off the needle. The yarn is Misti Alpaca hand paint lace in ceniza aka LP43.

Just because I haven’t knit a row or even removed it from it’s project bag doesn’t mean I’m not working on it, in my mind. I have been mulling over what to do with the Steampunkery SocksΒ and I have come to a decision. The plan is to tink back to the ribbing, add one more row of ribbing and carry on with the pattern. I think the biggest problem I am having is I am doing all the crazy new to me stitches on the purl row. I’ve never done these stitches on the knit row so doing them backwards on the purl row isn’t working so well. I think doing the first sock on the knit side first and then doing the second sock on the purl side is the smarter way to handle this.

I might be feeling just a little twitchy seeing all these projects laid out here all at once. If you’d like to read more WIP Wednesday posts be sure to visit Tami’s Amis blog.

I think you are doing a great job of keeping all your plates spinning in the air. It’s good to have some comfort knitting while you are figuring out your other, more challenging projects. I love the beaded shawl – it’s going to be stunning! Keep on spinning (those plates, I mean)!

  4. Love your spinning plates analogy. πŸ™‚ Sometimes life is like that, and other times things are slow. The nice thing is, there’s always some knitting to do, and for me, that usually means peace. Hope you have some today!

I am jealous of anyone with basic vanilla socks, because as much as I want to just make lots of pairs of those I always go for a pattern instead. I think your steampunky socks will work out, it will be a learning experience at least πŸ™‚

  6. Hope your knitting can give you some calm in the middle of spinning plates! I’m in a season like that too. Hubby is in law school and I’m managing the home with 2 kids. Blessings!

Keep those plates spinning! But be sure to relax with a little knitting too…I think it’s a good thing to have several different projects going…then you have something appropriate for every knitting opportunity that happens…

Perhaps I’m confuzzled, but will one row of ribbing make a difference on socks? I’m not being snarky, I’m honestly curious.

I’ve been thinking a Celestarium would be a fun knit, especially since the beads look randomly placed yet are to be stars.

You have a solid plan of action. Comfort vanilla socks are always wonderful. Celestrium will be outstanding in the end. And Plan B for the Steampunk socks sounds good.
