FO Friday: Now What?

I am so pleased to say that I finished my socks and I love them! I have been coveting real striped socks for quite some time and finally I got some self-striping sock yarn and got them done. The yarn is Biscotte  & Cie Felix in Hallucination A. I got mine at The Loopy Ewe. I can’t say enough about the yarn. It is soft and beautifully dyed. There is a tiny bit of variation in each stretch of color that I find lovely. There were no knots in the skein which is a thrill after what I’ve dealt with lately. I will be buying this yarn again. The pattern is the one I keep in my head but with afterthought heels. The afterthought heel really preserves the stripes in a way that I just love. The bullseye on the heel is really cute too.

Kepanie asked if I would show a photo of the heel, up close. Taking a photo of your own heels is a bit difficult but I did the best I could. As you can see the heel hugs my heel quite nicely. It’s nothing like the flat heel I showed you yesterday. I think afterthought heels are a lot like short row heels, they’re just done in different ways. If a short row heel fits in a way that you find pleasing you may like an afterthought heel. Remember the depth of the heel can be changed depending on the percent of stitches you use. I used 50% but I have seen people use 60% to get a deeper heel because that is what fits their heel better.

Here is the other side of the same heel. It shows the one tiny thing I am not happy with, See the point on the heel where I picked up the corner stitches. On this side on one foot there is a small hole. I think I neglected to twist the stitches as I usually do. I can live with it though. The only other problem I have is what to knit next. I have the purple cardigan to finish and a couple of other sweaters in various stages of near doneness. I also have some really nice sock yarn waiting to be knit into socks. And my head has been cold lately so I think a new hat is in order. But which will win out and get on my needles?

Those are the coolest socks evah! That yarn would make a neat sock monkey or monster too! Go ahead and start that hat or another pair of socks and work on your sweaters in between (????).

Ugh. I hate knots in a skein! Glad to hear you didn’t have any issues with this yarn. It knits up beautifully. I vote to cast-on a hat. For sure. I think it’s a complete necessity. 😀

  5. I love after-thought heels on striped socks! Nice to hear the yarn review. I haven’t tried that one yet, but maybe I’ll give it a go.

Ah the infamous hole near the ankle, I’ve always wondered how to prevent that but never took the time to learn how to do so. The afterthought heels do look wonderful when you are wearing the sock, I may have to try them sometime! Also Hallucination A is the perfect name for the colorway, love it!

I almost always wind up with holes when I pick up stitches for my gussets. I’ve decided that I can live with them 🙂

  8. Hooray! They look amazing! My OCD self is overjoyed with the way the stripes worked out. And I don’t know about you, but the whole “what’s next” problem is one I really enjoy. So much exciting possibility!

Great socks. Don’t you think you could pull the yarn (the hole) to either side to equalise? You would have five or six stitches slightly bigger than the rest and not one big stitch (the hole). Happy weekend. Regula

Thank you for going through the trouble of taking the heel shots! I really like how the sock hugs your heel. I will need to try this afterthought heel technique! Your socks are so awesome!
