Searching For Spring

I’ve been looking for signs of spring for the last few days and these are some of the things that I found.

My feet are still covered by warm woolen socks. They are a must or my feet would be freezing. That doesn’t seem very spring-like to me.

On the porch by the back door we still have a bunch of warm winter coats that are being worn daily. Also sitting here are the shovels used to remove the snow. That doesn’t seem like a very hopeful spring sign at all.

The porch itself is wearing its warm winter layer of stuff. The porch ends up being a catch all and no one wants to spend time out there putting everything away and cleaning it. It’s much too cold. That isn’t a hopeful spring sign either. If it was spring the porch would be clean and ready for daily use.

This looks fairly hopeful! Along the side of the garage the daffodils have started to come up. That must be a sure sign of spring. Of course we all know that daffodils pop through the soil at the first sign of a warm day be it January or April so maybe not so hopeful as thought.

Mental note for fall: Plant more bulbs along the garage. These are looking rather sparse. Tulips and crocus would be a nice touch with the daffodils. There is plenty of empty space over there.

As I walked around the house I discovered that the daisies by the chimney are coming up and they look quite progressed. Could these be a sign of spring? The chimney sits on the south side of the house where the snow always melts first and the sun shines for the most time every day. The daisies are pretty weed-like and have been known to grow right up through the snow so I guess they aren’t a sure sign of spring either. They are a hopeful promise of some nice flowers in summer though and I’m happy for that.

One final check for the signs of spring. This is the weather forecast for the next few days. It sure doesn’t look like spring is on the way no matter what the calendar says. Maybe next week we’ll have some real signs of spring. At least it’s a good thing I didn’t put those shovels away.

Spring is giving us the run-around this year isn’t she? We just had another storm overnight.

Spring is in Ohio – mid-70s most of today, great big T-storm (complete with hail) and a tornado watch until 9:00 tonight. Also, the marsh marigolds are up but it’s too muddy to go get photos.

Last Thursday it was 70+ degrees in NYC, and we were getting slightly sunburnt. This Thursday we woke up to snow.
